Why does Bard College ask me to donate when I may not be in a position to do so?
When we ask for support, we sometimes hear donors say, “Don’t you know... I was on financial aid, I have a family to support”?; “I don’t have the money to give”?; “I just graduated”?; “I am still paying off student loans”? Or “My child is on financial aid and we are working hard to cover the uncovered costs?”
The Office of Development does not maintain records that state who was on financial aid, who does or does not have expendable funds, or who is philanthropic and who is not. We include you because we do not want to assume anyone’s financial situation or who wants to be counted as a supporter.
The majority of our donors give modestly because they believe that Bard is an important institution for them and for others. Whether inspired by Bard’s mission, the faculty, the financial aid they received, or the friends or spouses they met while here, many want to donate to show their belief by supporting the College at all levels.
Giving to Bard is as much about your participation as it is the dollar amount. We do not want anyone to give who cannot. This is why we often encourage smaller gifts. $10 has an impact, both financially and as motivation to those who can donate larger amounts. We hope everyone will be as generous as possible. |
