A Lasting Impact:
John Stevens '94 Commitment to the Jean M. French Travel Award
In the journey of education, certain individuals leave lasting impressions that inspire and shape the lives of others. John Stevens '94, a Bard College alumnus from the class of '94, shares a heartfelt testament that exemplifies this profound connection. Recently nominated to serve on Bard's Alumni/ae Association Board of Governors, John recalls the immense influence that his art history professor, the late Jean French, had on his personal and professional development.
Driven by gratitude and a desire to give back, he has committed to endowing the Jean M. French Travel Award in Art History, an initiative designed to enrich the educational experiences of current students through travel opportunities. We are grateful for donors like John who not only cherish their own educational journeys but also actively seek to create meaningful opportunities for future generations. His reflection not only highlights his enduring bond with Bard but also underscores the importance of mentorship and the impactful legacy of educators like Jean French.

Jean M. French Travel Award in Art History
Earlier this year, I was honored and delighted to have been nominated to serve on Bard's Alumni/ae Association Board of Governors.
I had always felt a deep connection to the College, as my personal and educational experiences there have had a profound impact on my life and career, especially my relationship with my beloved art history professor, the late Jean French. I am happy to now be able to give back to the College, and this year I began a multi-year pledge to endow the Jean M. French Travel Award in Art History, which offers opportunities to students for group and individual travel, abroad and in the US. Having studied abroad as an Art History major at Bard, the purpose of this award is especially meaningful to me.

Prior to joining the board, I was part of my class reunion committees for both my 25th and 30th reunions. Both reunions were a total blast and reintroduced me to old and new friends. Serving on the board is a great pleasure. I get to know alumni/ae from many different eras and parts of the country, and hear first hand news of the College from President Botstein. He's been at Bard for 50 years!I live full time in Idaho now, but I previously called Seattle my home, so when the call went out to host a Cities Party, I was happy to organize one.
Bard is doing bold and critical work—that makes me proud.

Spotlight on Scholarship Recipients
-
Nora Graf ’28George Martin/Hans Thatcher Clarke Scholar
Nora had a unique path in education before coming to Bard. She went to a school in Hungary that specialized in music and arts education, and her primary instrument was the piano at the time. Bard was the first institution that she felt supported her in pursuing two very different interests at the same time. She has always been passionate about both arts and sciences, which led me to choose percussion and psychology. -
Emily Huang ’26Karen G. Olah ’65 Scholar
Emily is a first-generation student currently pursuing a dual degree in economics and mathematics. She is currently the chair of the Socially Responsible Investment Committee of Bard Student Government. The committee's mission is to leverage power over corporations through shareholder engagement. She is also the head treasurer of the Asian Students Organization, a research intern for Levy Economics Institute, and a peer counselor. -
Ethan Malpica-Santiago ’26Posse Scholar
Ethan is from Puerto Rico. He is a theater and performance major whose current goal in life is to be surrounded by inspiring individuals in and out of the classroom. His favorite thing at Bard is the connections he has made with other students, many of which have been fostered by the theater community and faculty. Fittingly, he is also one of the club heads for the Bard Musical Theater Club.
